Symptoms

It refers to the inability of a man to make his wife pregnant after at least a year of regular sexual intercourse, without the use of contraceptives. Inability to conceive a child after six months of unprotected sex in the absence of female causes is also known as infertility. It can be Primary and Secondary infertility. Primary infertility: It refers to a couple that has never been able to conceive. Secondary infertility: The couples that have previously been pregnant at least once fall in the category of secondary infertility.

Prevention

In order to avoid any complications of infertility it is imperative to:

  • Practice safer sex behaviors.
  • Mumps immunization prevents mumps-related sterility.
  • Some forms of birth control carry a higher risk for future infertility. The potential benefits of a contraceptive should therefore all be reviewed and discussed with both partners and the health care provider before usage.

Diagnosis

The diagnostic tests performed for the detection of infertility in a couple include:

Testicular Biopsy: In this process a tissue of the testes, the male reproductive organ is taken for examination . The test is performed when the semen analysis suggests a low sperm count.

Semen Analysis: Semen analysis is carried out to evaluate ejaculate collected after 2 to 3 days of complete abstinence to determine volume and viscosity of semen and sperm count, motility, swimming speed, and shape.

Postcoital Test (PCT): This test is performed so as to evaluate sperm-cervical mucus interaction through analysis of cervical mucus collected 2 to 8 hours after the couple has intercourse.

Dietary Guidelines

Consume plenty of soybean-based food with considerable estrogenic level. Prefer raw fruits, vegetables and whole grains to animal fats, white sugar, refined flour and junk food. Alcohol can hamper fertilized egg implantation in the uterine lining and condense sperm count. Therefore quit alcohol, coffee, beverages and chocolate. Better switch over to stuff rich in proteins and B-vitamins such as fish, nuts, legumes and low-fat dairy products.

Home Care Suggestions

Do not use commercial vaginal douches; use a vaginal lubricant that won’t disturb the natural acid or alkaline balance of the vagina. A cold bath before intercourse is likely to increase and activate the sperm count. Those underweight should gain as it may assist in the production of estrogen. Ovulation kits may help to determine favorable time for conception. Tight underclothes, steroids and hot showers may have adverse effects on sperm count, the pituitary gland or the testicles. Abstain from smoking, unnecessary use of drugs and hectic exercise.

Mind/Body Considerations

Relaxation will complement frequent medication. Why not take a vacation!
