Influenza   Information You Need
Basics

Influenza or Flu is the highly contagious viral infection of respiratory tract that is caused by Orthomyxoviridae. There are three groups of Influenza viruses, their differentiation based on the antigens of their protein coats. Influenza is unique for its antigenic variation, which occurs almost yearly in-group a Influenza virus, less frequently or never in other Influenza strains. Influenza’s great risk is its infection of the body with an altered structure virus, against which the body has little or no defense. This allows the flu to remain a major epidemic every year. Influenza is acquired by inhalation or ingestion of virus contaminated respiratory secretions. It takes the virus 1-2 days to incubate in the respiratory system. Using an enzyme (neuraminidase) on its envelope, the virus disables the respiratory mucus, and then, using another envelope protein - Hemagglutinin, it forces its RNA into the respiratory system cell. Among Influenza’s symptoms are chills, fevers, headaches and muscular aches and pains, which are caused by the body’s immune systems. Recovery occurs after 3 to 7 days. Influenza is not regarded lethal by itself, but it may ease the way for pneumonia causing bacteria.

Symptoms

Influenza symptoms differ from those you have with a cold. They are usually more serious and leave you lying flat on your back. Unlike the stomach “flu,” influenza usually does not cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Prevention

The best prevention for Influenza is bed rest and taking plenty of drinks.

Causes

The Influenza virus causes influenza. An Influenza-virus attacks the cells of the respiratory tract and enters it. It then uses the cell’s reproductive system to reproduce itself. Within a very short period, it produces hundreds of new viruses. It takes about an hour for the virus to kill the infected cells. New viruses are released from the cells and these start attacking other cells.

Diagnosis

There are a number of laboratory tests available which will confirm the diagnosis of Influenza. The virus may be cultured from swabs of your deep nasal passages or throat, or blood tests may confirm a rise in your antibody to the virus, indicating a recent infection. These tests require specialized laboratory services and may not be readily available or practical in your physician's office practice setting. So called "rapid diagnostic tests" have been or are being developed which may eventually combine accurate diagnosis of Influenza with the simplicity of office testing. Usually your physician will make the diagnosis of Influenza based on your symptoms and physical examination findings. During epidemics of Influenza, this presumptive diagnosis will be very accurate. However, if there is concern about the diagnosis, your physician may wish to perform other tests, for example, a blood count or a chest x-ray.

Dietary Guidelines

Light and healthy foods are helpful. You may not have much appetite, but it is important to provide the body with energy and nutrients to support the healing process. Again, hot soups with aromatic herbs like sage and thyme are soothing. Avoid too much dairy as it can increase mucus production and congestion. Sugar and sweets can impair the ability of the white blood cells to fight the virus.

Home Care Suggestions

Massage can improve circulation, promote relaxation and enhance immune function. A few drops of eucalyptus, tea tree or white pine in a little sesame or olive oil is great for chest or foot massage. Garlic oil can be massaged into the skin.

Mind/Body Considerations

Proper care of your body when you have Influenza can result in feeling stronger and rested. Neglecting to provide the support your body needs can leave you fatigued and vulnerable to more serious infections. The message behind an acute viral illness may be, "slow down and take some time to nourish and take care of yourself. Rest is very important to getting well. Rest allows the body to heal. But many busy people don't allow enough time for rest and relaxation. Even when ill, many people don't take time to take care of themselves. Even a brief period of rest can help you get well faster and also avoids exposing others to the virus. So, reschedule your commitments. Relax in bed. Read or listen to music. Get plenty of sleep. Appreciate the opportunity to take care of yourself.
