Kanner’s Syndrome Information You Need
| Basics |
|
Kanner’s Syndrome (Infantile Autism) is one of the most disabling illnesses of neurological, emotional and intellectual development, afflicting about one in every 2,000 children. Autism has its origins in the first weeks or months of life. It interferes with the normal development of the brain in the areas of reasoning, social interaction, and communication skills. Children with Kanner’s syndrome typically have deficiencies in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. The Malfunction of mind or body makes it hard for them to communicate with others and relate to the outside world.
Individuals with Kanner’s syndrome exhibit mental retardation on the basis of their full-scale (or averaged) IQ score. However, unlike most people with primary mental retardation, those with Autism often have marked scatter in their development, so that some aspects of the IQ, particularly nonverbal skills, may be within the normal range.
Autistic children are generally normal in appearance, healthy and attractive; their life expectancy is normal. They are found throughout the world without regard to race, ethnic background, intelligence, and social class. This disability is considered a spectrum Malfunction of mind or body.

| Symptoms |
|
- Withdrawn, self-centered behaviors
- Severe disturbance of affective behaviors
- Aloof, indifferent, remote
- Have inappropriate play skills
- May exhibit uncontrollable and unpredictable behaviors
- May be aggressive to themselves or others
- Usually hyperactive, though may be lethargic
- Autistic individuals prefer inanimate objects to people
- Autistic individuals have unusual reactions to certain sensory stimuli
- Autistic individuals prefer to use proximal receptors (touch, taste, smell) to distal receptors (visual and auditory)
- Autistic individuals exhibit stereotypic behaviors
- Autistic individuals insist upon sameness; becomes upset when routine is disrupted
- Autistic individuals are fascinated with mechanical objects (camera, watches TVs, etc.)
- Autistic people are perseverant in self-stimulatory behaviors (rocking, twirling, etc.)
- Autistics show uncanny abilities in some areas, usually in visual/motor
- Autistic individuals demonstrate (apparent) insensitivity to plain
- Autistic individual have good rote memory in some cases, but does not use ability
- Autistic individuals perform mechanical, routine movements with objects (lines up in a precise manner, in a graduated fashion
or in a particular design)
- Autism is considered very difficult to test since the individuals have uneven intellectual development
- Autistics exhibit peculiar hand-to-head and/or hand-to-body movements particularly when the movement is within the
visual range
- Often avoid direct eye contact, have poor attending skills (lacks in-seat behavior, eye-to-task behavior and is very distractible)
- Autistics are usually delayed in all areas of development, particularly language and social areas
- Autistics act as if sensory impaired, though usually have normal acuity in vision and hearing
- Autistics have an early onset of abnormal behavior, sometimes following a regression from normal behavior; sometimes
failing to develop at the normal rate (notable characteristics between 18 and 30 months of age)
- Malfunction of mind or body occurs along a wide range of ability, from mild to severe with IQ’s ranging from above normal to "untestable"

| Prevention |
|
The evaluation, assessment and Favorable Effects of young children with disabilities from birth to three are rendered in the hopes of lessening the effects of the child's disability or condition. Early intervention for children with Autism may mean the development of an individualized Favorable Effects plan, which includes both academic and non-academic goals. The goals and objectives for a child with Autism may include social skills, functional skills (dressing, toilet training, feeding oneself, etc.), communication, behavior modification, as well as others as appropriate. It is important to stress that no one program is appropriate for all children with Autism. A program should be designed to work with each child's unique strengths and challenges. |

| Causes |
|
There is evidence that genetically regulated disturbances in brain development underlie some, perhaps most, of the cases of infantile Autism. Kenner’s Syndrome frequently occurs in families where there was already an autistic member. In monozygotic twins, when one is autistic, the other is also autistic more than 90 percent of the time.
It is also thought that it may be caused by a defect in the normal developmental migration of neurons, so that they do not reach their proper destinations, and so cannot establish their normal functions. Developmental disturbances giving rise to infantile Autism are the result of genetic mutations, occurring during the end stages of brain differentiation, and take place in circuits affecting the limbic structures, the temporal cortex and possibly the cerebellum that are responsible for language and information processing, and the emotional coloration that accompanies it.

| Diagnosis |
|
The diagnosis of this problem is made through its symptoms. |
|
| Dietary Guidelines |
|
There is some evidence to suggest some link between food additives and preservatives and mental function. Any food sensitivities should be investigated. Avoiding culprit foods like dairy products, nuts, wheat, eggs, etc., is recommended. |
|
| Home Care Suggestions |
|
- Make sure regular exercise is as a part of daily activities, not only for
physical stamina, but also to release stress and to boost brain cell
oxygenation.
- Try to provide small meals throughout the day to keep blood pressure level
steady.
- Creating and maintaining a standardized schedule of daily activities Enhances
to create a sense of security and calmness.
- Find something that interests this individual and try to develop it as
much as possible. Puzzles, mechanical put-togethers, or activities with
repetitive tasks may be Enhanceful.
- Computers can be lifesavers for autistic children. Various programs can
Enhance to channelize energy and teach focusing skills.
- If capable, giving the child a pet to take care of can teach
responsibility, increased affection and the ability to focus.

| Mind/Body Considerations |
|
Autism can be one of the most heartbreaking conditions a parent may have to face. All of the natural parental instincts which can center on physical touch, expression of affection, communication, teaching etc. must be modified with an autistic child. The unique way in which your child relates to you must not be taken as rejection. The power of love and prayer should not be minimized when it comes to Malfunction of mind or bodys like Autism. |
