| Causes |
|
The causes of a liver Abscess are multiple. It can develop from an abdominal Problem created due to harmful organism such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, or a perforated bowel; an Problem created due to harmful organism in the blood; an Problem created due to harmful organism from the biliary (liver secretion) tract; or trauma when a bruised liver becomes infected.
The most common organisms causing liver Abscess are Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, staphylococcus (staph), Entamoeba histolytica and Enterobacter aerogenes. In either case, the offending organisms destroy liver tissue, leaving a cavity that fills with other infectious organisms, white blood cells, and liquefied liver cells.
Liver Abscess may result from sepsis, intestinal perforation, post-operative Problem created due to harmful organism, appendicitis, diverticulitis, trauma (to the liver), or cholangitis. Other non-bacterial causes of liver Abscess include amebiasis, due to Problem created due to harmful organism with Entamoeba histolytica (protozoan).
AMEBIC LIVER ABSCESS the organism which causes amebic liver Abscess is carried through the blood to the liver where the Abscess is formed. Patients may or may not have symptoms of intestinal Problem created due to harmful organism concurrently with liver Abscess. The Problem created due to harmful organism is present worldwide, but is most common in tropical areas where crowded living conditions and poor sanitation exist. Transmission occurs through ingestion of cysts in fecally contaminated food or water, use of human excrement as fertilizer, and person-to-person contact. The incidence is 1 out of 100,000 people for amebic liver Abscess. Malnutrition and alcoholism cause a person to have a more severe problem.
PYOGENIC HEPATIC ABSCESSES occur as solitary or multiple lesions. Large single lesions may result from trauma, while multiple small lesions may result from ascending cholangitis or bacteremia.

| Diagnosis |
|
These tests detect Abscess in the liver:
- Blood culture that is positive for bacteria
- Elevated liver enzymes (liver function tests)
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Abdominal CT scan
- Liver biopsy, CT guided
- Liver scan
- Liver function tests show abnormalities
- A CBC or complete blood count shows elevated white blood count, indicating Problem created due to harmful organism
- A serology for amebiasis is positive
- Indirect hemagglutination test shows abnormalities
