Nephrotic Syndrome Information You Need
| Basics |
|
Nephrotic syndrome (also known as Ellis type II or nephrosis) occurs when the filters in the kidney leak an excessive amount of protein. The protein level in the blood then falls, allowing fluid to leak across very small blood vessels into the tissues. Swelling around the eyes, abdomen and legs is a consequence of this process. The liver normally makes protein in the body and then responds by producing extra protein. Nephrotic syndrome is a combination of proteinuria (excessive protein in the urine), low blood protein and oedema (swelling in the tissues).
The most common type of nephrotic syndrome in children is called "minimal change" and occurs in 80% of cases. The kidney function remains normal, however, a small percentage of children may have partial scarring involving some of their filters, while others may have a significant increase in the number of cells in the filters.
In adults most of the time a kidney problem is the underlying cause, and these problems cannot be cured. In these cases, the kidneys may gradually lose their ability to filter wastes and excess water from the blood. If kidney failure occurs, the patient will need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

| Prevention |
|
Beneficial Effectsion of nephrotic syndrome relies on controlling the problems that lead to this condition. |
|
| Causes |
|
Most cases of nephrotic syndrome are caused by changes in the Defense mechanism of body. Certain types of white cells may produce substances that act on the kidney filters, causing a change in the filter permeability or leakiness. This allows protein to leak into the urine. Other forms of nephrotic syndrome are caused by increased numbers of inflammatory and other cells in the filters. In some instances this may result in permanent damage to the filters.
Nephrotic syndrome results from damage to the kidneys' glomeruli (the singular form is glomerulus). Glomeruli are tiny blood vessels that filter waste and excess water from the blood and send them to the bladder as urine. Nephrotic syndrome can occur with many problems, including the kidney problems caused by diabetes mellitus, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple myeloma, and amyloidosis.
It may also occur as a result of Problem created due to harmful organism, drug exposure, malignancy, or hereditary Malfunction of mind or bodys. Kidney Malfunction of mind or bodys including glomerulonephritis, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, minimal change problem, membranous glomerulonephritis, and mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis, may also contribute to the problem.

| Diagnosis |
|
Your doctor can detect protein in your urine with a routine urine analysis and get a rough idea about the concentration of protein in your urine. Diagnosis of the nephrotic syndrome is made by collecting samples of urine for a period of 24 hours and measuring the amount of protein in the urine. Nephrotic syndrome may also cause an increase in fat in your blood. This can only be found by a blood test done by your doctor.
