Sinusitis
| Basics |
|
Sinusitis is a disorder involving infection and/or inflammation of the sinuses of the head. Sinuses are the air passages behind the cheekbones, eyebrows and jaw. There are 4 pairs of sinuses connected to the nasal cavity by small openings. Normally, air passes in and out of the sinuses and mucus and fluid drain from the sinuses into the nose. The pain of sinusitis results from the inflammation itself or from pressure within the sinus from accumulation of undrained fluid.
There are two kinds of sinusitis:
- Acute
- Chronic
Chronic sinusitis recurs frequently, or lasts for a prolonged time.
Acute sinusitis affects approximately 3 out of 1,000 people. Some people never get it and others develop sinusitis frequently (especially patients with cystic fibrosis). It usually follows respiratory infections such as colds and can last from several weeks to several months.

| Prevention |
|
Sinusitis can be prevented by being aware of its causes, which are listed above. Some of these causes are natural, but others are part of day-to-day activities and happenings. Therefore, taking steps to avoid these would be a good way of preventing sinusitis from occurring. Some of these are listed below:
- Avoid swimming in heavily populated waters.
- Use decongestants during upper respiratory infections.
- Stay clear of dust, smoke & overcrowding.

| Causes |
|
Sinusitis occurs when there is an undrained collection of pus in one or more of the sinuses. The causes could include any of the following:
- Nasal infection.
- Swimming in infected water. This allows the water and bacteria to enter the sinus, causing irritation and infection. The fluid trapped in the sinus may then become infected with bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
- Dental infections (molar or premolar tooth infection or dental extraction).
- People who have a deviated nasal septum are predisposed to developing sinusitis because the fluid in the sinuses is trapped due to the disorder.
- Swelling of the membranes of the nose, which is caused by allergic rhinitis or viral respiratory infections. This swelling prevents fluid from draining out of the sinus normally.
- Pollution dust smoke & overcrowding also predispose to sinus infection.

| Diagnosis |
|
Certain signs and tests can also indicate whether sinusitis exists or not.
- Tran illumination (examination by shining a light against the sinus) may indicate sinusitis.
- A CBC shows elevated white blood cell count.
- A culture of drainage may show bacteria (or, occasionally, a virus or fungus).
- A sinus or head X-rays, cranial CT scan, or cranial MRI shows sinusitis or thickening of the membranes of the sinus.
