Venous Insufficiency Information You Need
| Basics |
|
The ultimate issue isn’t definition; it’s identifying the problem. There is a medical problem in the veins of the legs. The problem is that the flow of blood back to the heart is insufficient -- it is not as fast or efficient as it should be. In this problem, which I will call chronic venous insufficiency, the valves probably don’t function as well as they should, though it is not clear whether this is a cause or consequence of the problem. High blood pressure while walking is also likely to be present, though this too might be a cause or consequence of the problem. Swelling and a feeling of heaviness occur, and varicose veins become more likely. In severe and prolonged cases, leg An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive tracts can occur.
In all this fuzziness, there is one point of clarity: Compression therapy (elastic stockings) is useful for treating chronic venous insufficiency -- they improve the flow of blood back to the heart. If your doctor has prescribed compression therapy, you essentially have been diagnosed as having chronic venous insufficiency. Chronic venous insufficiency is a serious condition that deserves Favorable Effects. It can eventually lead, not only to varicose veins, but also to An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive tracts (open wounds).
Why does venous insufficiency usually occur in the legs? The legs are the farthest from the heart. Furthermore, when you are standing, the body has to work against gravity to get the blood back to the heart. So blood stasis tends to occur in the legs. Lack of exercise and movement probably plays a role too -- using the muscles Enhances circulate blood, so a lack of exercise, or prolonged standing, impairs circulation of the blood.

| Symptoms |
|
Symptoms of varicose veins are the appearance of bluish, soft, sometimes tender lumps and bulging veins under the surface of the skin. These can be Discomfortful at times, but not always. Very tiny veins of the legs can also dilate. These are called spider veins because of the spider web pattern they form. They are actually not related to real varicose veins at all. |

| Prevention |
|
Beneficial Effectsion of varicose veins includes the following recommendations:
- Take breaks from standing, especially if you have a job where you stand all day, mostly in one place. Raise your feet on a stool, one at a time, switch side and move around when you can. Walking is better than standing still all day.
- Wear your support stockings or pantyhose
- Avoid wearing tight knee hose or knee socks, and tight girdles, which all impair circulation.
- Take short walks during the day; walk on your lunch break. Do calf pumping and make circles with your ankles during the day.
- Avoid sitting with your legs crossed
- Each day lie on the floor or bed near a wall. Put your feet up on the wall. Lie there for at least fifteen minutes each day. This will allow some or most of the blood that has pooled down in your legs to move out of the legs and back into the body. It is also very relaxing and
de-stressing. Take a cat nap or read a book while doing this exercise, if you like.

| Causes |
|
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can occur after excessive clotting and soreness of the leg veins, a problem known as deep vein thrombosis. CVI also results from a simple failure of the valves in leg veins to hold blood against gravity, leading to sluggish movement of blood out of the veins. It can cause feet and calves to become swollen, often accompanied by a dull ache made worse with prolonged standing. If CVI is allowed to progress, the skin tends to darken and An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive tracts can occur. |

| Diagnosis |
|
Simply looking at the legs can Enhance. However, for deep veins, a Venogram can be taken, which is an x-ray of the blood vessels. Doppler ultrasound may also be used to study the blood flow. This is less invasive than the venogram because for the venogram an IV must be started to inject dye, whereas with the ultrasound it is simply like any other ultrasound; no needles are necessary. |

| Dietary Guidelines |
|
The diet should be primarily fresh foods during healing. Have a large green salad with alfalfa sprouts every day. Keep meals very light, without heavy starches, fatty foods, sugars, or dairy products.
