Weight loss
| Basics |
|
Weight control is a strategy that is adopted as a preventive life style. It is
an attitude of keeping weight down. As fried and fatty foods have increased in our
diets and the demand for physical labor has decreased, there is an increase in obesity. Most people today are appearance motivated to lose weight. Every one is looking for the miracle tablet that will help him and her lose weight. Weight loss is not easy today with our life styles. Reaching your ideal weight is a victory and maintaining it requires strict vigilance. Plus there are side effects that should be kept in mind. The epidemic rise in eating disorders is staggering. It is estimated that in the U.S. alone, 150,000 women will die from eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, this year. Studies now show that dieting is the precursor to developing these deadly diseases. Dieting alienates us from the natural process of hunger and sets us up for the real physical side effects of dieting, resulting in women and men who have learned to ignore their own "survival mechanisms" and literally starve and binge themselves to death. Current estimates indicate that one in five women is suffering from a severe form of an eating disorder, and eight out of ten have some of the symptoms of one or more of these illnesses. And more men are developing these disorders as well. |

| Prevention |
|
Preventing the harmful effects of weight loss is very important. Weight loss is also known to have many benefits. For example, it helps to reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and other harmful effects on the body. Normal eating does not need a meal plan. Normal eating is being able to eat when you are hungry and continue eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and eat it and truly get enough of it - not just stop eating because you think you should. Normal eating is being able to use some moderate constraint in your food selection to get the right food, but not being so restrictive that you miss out on pleasurable foods. It is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes because you are happy, sad, bored, or just because it feels good. Normal eating is three meals a day for some but it can also be choosing to eat between meals. It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have some again tomorrow. In short, normal eating is flexible. It varies in response to your emotions, your schedule, your hunger, and your proximity to food. If you eat foods that are good for you and get regular exercise, you won't necessarily be thin but you will be healthier and probably happier. |

| Causes |
|
The three major diagnoses identified as associated with involuntary weight loss are:
Depression: This was identified in one study as the most frequent cause of weight loss.
Malignancy: Gastrointestinal and pulmonary malignancies are important causes of weight loss. The cytokine tumor necrosis factor has been implicated with this type of weight loss.
Other Causes:
Cardiac disorders– congestive heart failure (CHF)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Renal failure
Infection – especially pulmonary TB
Endocrine disorders |
|
| Diagnosis |
|
Diagnosis usually involves an examination at the doctor’s office, which shows whether the weight loss has been very sudden. Have the eating habits undergone a change?
Has the patient been avoiding food? Or are there some other reasons that cause weight
loss? Thin, brittle or dry hair, lowered heart size, constipation, mild anemia, diminished muscle mass, dry skin, mild edema, decreased body fat, brittle
nails and amenorrhea are all signs of weight loss. |
|
| Dietary Guidelines |
|
A proper diet is necessary. Depriving the body of nourishment is not a very effective way to lose weight. If you are on a diet, drink plenty of water and juices in order to compensate. |
|
| Home Care Suggestions |
|
Daily exercise helps to maintain fitness, but this does not mean that it should be overdone. Overdoing exercise and letting the body starve in order to lose weight is very harmful. Some people actually cut down on their sleep patterns in order to lose weight. This is also every harmful for the body. Practice moderation and maintain a balanced program for both diet and exercise. For weight loss caused by oral or dental problems, see the dentist. For weight loss caused by disease, follow prescribed therapy in treating the underlying cause |

| Mind/Body Considerations |
|
Different body types have different strengths and weaknesses. While a fat person might have more complications from a broken leg, they are also less likely to break bones in the first place. Trying to be healthy and happy with the body you have is more realistic and more productive. |
