Basics


Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It results in an inflammation of the tissues and supporting structures or the teeth. This disease may go undetected in the early stages. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal (gum) disease and can progress to a stage where tooth loss may occur as a result of the weakening of the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. It affects an estimated 90% of all adults, but if caught, the damage caused by gingivitis is reversible.

Symptoms

Being the initial stage of periodontal problem, gingivitis is mostly asymptomatic, which may be the reason why most people remain unaware of its presence, till a later, more advanced and irreversible, stage. If present, symptoms would include

  • Bleeding gums 
  • Swollen and puffy gums 
  • Reddish discolored gums 
  • Tender gums 
  • Bad breath 
  • Bad taste

Prevention


Gingivitis can be prevented and treated by adopting the following measures

  • Brush your teeth and gums at least twice a day.
  • Floss your teeth daily.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Check your gums for signs and symptoms of gum disease.
  • Avoid sweets.
  • Eat a nutritious and balanced diet.
  • See your dentist regularly.

Causes

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor dental hygiene. Allowing bacterial plaque to accumulate on the surfaces of the teeth is the main underlying cause of this Discomfortful condition. Tartar formation, crooked teeth, food stuck between teeth, mouth breathing, and improperly fitting dentures and dental appliances have also been implicated in the development of gingivitis. 

Other factors leading to gingivitis would include the following:
Smoking/Tobacco: Aside from being linked with many serious illnesses such as Long standing problems, lung problem and heart problem, tobacco users are also at increased risk for periodontal problem. Recent studies have shown that tobacco use may be one of the most significant risk factors in the development and progression of periodontal problem. 

Genetics: Research proves that up to 30% of the population may be genetically susceptible to gum problem, despite aggressive oral care habits. Identification and early interventive Favorable Effects may Enhance Beneficial Effects the incidence of the condition.

Pregnancy and Puberty: The increased incidence of gingivitis seen during puberty and pregnancy suggests a role for endocrine hormones. Additionally, recent studies suggest that pregnant women with gum problem are seven times more likely to deliver premature, low birth weight babies. 

Stress: Stress can make it more difficult for the body to fight off Problem created due to harmful organism, including periodontal problems, and is linked to many serious conditions such as High blood pressure, Long standing problems, and numerous other health problems. 

Medications: Some drugs, such as oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, and certain heart a substance used in managing discomforts, can affect your oral health. 

Clenching or Grinding Your Teeth: Clenching or grinding your teeth can put excess force on the supporting tissues of the teeth and could speed up the rate at which these periodontal tissues are destroyed.

Diagnosis


Gingivitis is diagnosed by the alterations of the gingival margin that develop when bacteria are allowed to accumulate along the junction between the tooth surface and the gingival. Redness, swelling and a soft consistency of the marginal tissue are the most common symptoms. The diagnosis of gingivitis is often obvious when a young complains of bleeding during tooth brushing or when flossing. The whole mouth is screened for the presence of gingivitis symptoms and particular emphasis should be placed at the approximal regions where the periodontitis most frequently starts.

Dietary Guidelines

  • Avoid acid-forming foods, such as tomatoes, refined foods and carbonated drinks
  • Eat raw, crunchy foods to stimulate the gums; apples , celery, grape nuts cereal, seeds, high fiber grains
  • Eat cultured food for friendly, digestive bacteria.

Home Care Suggestions

  • Brush teeth well twice a day
  • Floss once a day
  • Eat sugarless, low fat snacks
  • Rinse your mouth immediately after eating
