High - Triglycerides Information You Need
| Basics |
|
High level of triglycerides is a common form of hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia means elevation of one or more of the lipids including cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids. It is an increase in the concentration of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) or bad lipids in the plasma. The relationship between triglyceride (lipid molecules derived from what is left after dietary fats are digested in the body) and cardiovascular problems is of great importance for physicians as well individuals suffering from high triglyceride levels. Increase level of triglycerides will lead to severe health problems.
Hypertriglyceridemia can be classified into primary and secondary hyperlipoproteinemia.
Primary Hyperlipoproteinemia is further subdivided into hypertriglyceridemia and borderline hypertriglyceridemia. The former consists of patients with triglyceride levels between 500 and l, 500 mg/dL (fewer than 1 in 1000 individuals would have triglyceride levels higher then 500 mg/dL). The latter however, is for individuals with a triglyceride level between 250 and 500 mg/dL. Five to 10 percent of adult Americans have borderline hypertriglyceridemia.
Secondary Hyperlipoproteinemia is the occurrence of hypertriglyceridemia due to secondary factors like obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypothyroidism, stress, etc.

Screening family members for high triglycerides may detect the problem early. |

| Causes |
|
Lipid molecules or triglycerides derived from dietary fats comprise the largest proportion of fats (lipids) in the adipose tissue, and in the blood. Immediately after a meal, triglycerides appear in the blood as a major component of chylomicrons. In healthy individuals these triglycerides are stripped of fatty acids as they pass through the various tissues. The liver absorbs the chylomicron residue so that the former disappear from the blood with a few hours. The left over triglycerides, plus additional triglycerides made by the liver are then repackaged as very low-density lipoprotein and secreted from the blood into the liver. An increase in the triglyceride level in the VLDL is called
Hypertriglyceridemia.
The reason as to why the triglyceride levels increase is not known but certain factors have been associated with this condition:
- Obesity
- Alcohol
- High levels of sugar.
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure.
- Family history of hypertriglycerides.
- Family history of heart problem.

|
| Diagnosis |
|
- Mildly to moderately elevated coronary risk profile - triglycerides
- Elevated LDL
|
|
| Dietary Guidelines |
|
Wherever possible alcohol use should be discontinued. Oral contraceptive use should be reviewed and the specific type chosen carefully. Restriction of excess calories and reduction of saturated fats in the diet is indicated |
|
| Home Care Suggestions |
|
Call for an appointment with your health care provider (for screening) if family members are found to have elevated triglyceride or LDL levels. |
|
| Mind/Body Considerations |
|
The key to healthy living is in cultivating a positive mental attitude. Avoid stress, through meditation, prayer or by engaging in hobbies |
