Cyst (Breast) Information You Need
| Basics |
|
Mammary cysts are found in women of all ages. Active secretion of fluid occurs in the breast duct and lobular system (milk forming structures) even when lactation is not occurring. Cysts may form as a result of duct obstruction, usually by a keratin plug, or as a result of the involutional or aging process. Cysts may be solitary or multiple and 20 to 50 percent of women have breast cysts.
Cysts usually appear as rounded densities on a mammogram. Cysts cannot be accurately diagnosed by mammography, as they cannot be distinguished from other well-defined masses. When a new or larger well-defined mass is seen mammographically, an ultrasound study is usually recommended to establish whether a mass is cystic or solid in nature.
Cysts may be under tension from undrained secretions. Cyst aspiration using ultrasound guidance is commonly employed to relieve associated discomfort. Cysts also may contain blood or debris, producing an indeterminate appearance at ultrasound; cyst aspiration is most commonly performed at our institution to differentiate cyst containing blood ro debris from a solid mass. Occasionally we perform cyst aspirations on women with multiple large cysts prior to mammography so that the underlying glandular tissues are better seen.
The risks of cyst aspiration are resultant Discomfort (usually mild, if any), bleeding resulting in a small or large bruise, and Problem created due to harmful organism (very rare). The benefit of differentiating a cyst from the rare well-marginated malignancy outweighs these risks. Cysts are fluid filled pockets that form in the tissues of the breast, causing a mass. Mammography or ultrasound can suggest that a breast mass is a cyst.

| Causes |
|
This is the most common breast problem that women have; over 50% of adult females have it. This is most frequent in women of childbearing age, and primarily occurs between the ages of 30 and 50.
When there is too much fluid in the breast, instead of moving it out of the breast, the lymph system stores it in small spaces, here and there. Eventually, fibrous tissue surrounds them and thickens, forming cysts. These cysts frequently swell just before the monthly, causing Discomfort. These cysts may change in size; but, although tender, they move freely. In contrast, a Long standing problemsous growth generally does not move freely, is usually not tender, and does not leave. It is important to regularly examine each breast for lumps, and determine what kind they are. It is best to do this weekly. It is known that the risk of breast Long standing problems is three times as great in women with cysts. Breast cysts rarely appear after the age of 50, when estrogen levels are less. Hormonal imbalance, abnormal production of breast milk (caused by high levels of estrogen), and an underactive thyroid can induce cysts.

| Diagnosis |
|
Diagnosis consists mostly of mammographs and a typical examination of the breasts by a doctor. A cyst is diagnosed definitively when a needle is inserted into it and the doctor is able to draw out fluid. This is ideal for women with cysts, because the procedure both diagnoses and removes the cyst at the same time. A cyst should completely disappear when drained and the tension of it is relieved.
If the fluid removed is not bloody, it does not have to be sent to a lab for analysis, unless the women is post-menopausal and not on hormone replacement. The woman needs to come in for a follow-up in 4-6 weeks. If she is normal at the re-check, then she may resume routine breast screening. If the cyst reforms, then she will be sent to a specialist who will check her out for a type of breast Long standing problems called intracystic carcinoma. A biopsy of the tissue around the cyst will be done.
If the fluid removed is bloody, it will be sent to a lab for analysis and the women will be referred to a specialist immediately. Again, this is to check for the possibility of intracystic carcinoma. A biopsy will be performed to determine what the breast mass is made of.
