Homocystinuria   Information You Need
Basics

cysteine is an amino acid (a building block of protein) produced in the human body. An increase in its production may lead to artery blockage (arteriosclerosis), high cholesterol levels, and an increased ability to clot blood leading to blood vessel blockages. Experts have discovered that individuals with high homocysteine levels have at least three times the risk of heart attack than people with lower levels. An estimated 10 percent of the risk of cardiovascular disease can be attributed to high homocysteine levels. Normal homocysteine levels range between 1 and 10 micromoles per liter.

Symptoms

  • High cholesterol
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Blood vessel blockages

All of the above may point to high levels of homocysteine. It would be advisable to get a diagnosis from your physician concerning this condition.

Prevention

High homocysteine levels can be prevented by a sensible diet. Folic Acid (found in green leafy vegetables), vitamin B-6 (found in meats and fortified cereals), vitamin B-12 (found in meats, potatoes, bananas and fortified cereals) are believed to keep homocysteine levels in check by converting excessive homocysteine into essential amino acids. Regular blood tests checking homocysteine levels will keep you aware of any possible health risks and will aid in initiating treatment as soon as possible.

Causes

In a healthy individual, homocysteine is changed into beneficial amino acids for the body. If a person’s homocysteine level is too high, then it means that he/she is suffering from a deficiency of B vitamins or enzymes essential to this process (conversion of homocysteine to amino acids). Other possible causes may include low thyroid hormone levels, kidney disease, psoriasis, certain medications or inherited deficiencies in the enzymes used to process homocysteine in the body.

Diagnosis

Pathological tests of the feces and serum are required to make the diagnosis.

Dietary Guidelines

Certain fibers also help counter high cholesterol, protect against cancer and maintain a normal blood sugar level, which is especially important for people with diabetes. And the cereals in the grain group should be fortified with extra nutrients, especially B vitamins like folic acid and B-12. Folic acid can lower blood levels of homocysteine, a substance that increases the risk of heart disease. Then come the fruits and vegetables, both of which are best consumed as fiber-rich whole foods, not juice. They can be sliced, chopped or pureed and they can be fresh, canned or frozen, but fruits packed in syrup provide too many sweet calories, the researchers said. The recommended three or more servings of vegetables and two or more servings of fruits should feature foods that are richly colored - dark green, orange, red or yellow. These are richest in essential nutrients. Vegetables in the cabbage family such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and mustard greens are rich in cancer-blocking chemicals. In the dairy group, the three recommended servings a day should feature low-fat choices. Russell said people who were lactose intolerant still could drink lactose-reduced milk, low-fat hard cheeses and yogurt. Most adults in this country do not get enough vital calcium or vitamin D nutrients. Within the meat group, the two or more daily servings should emphasize variety and feature fish (which may reduce cardiac risk) and dried beans (rich in fiber) as well as lean cuts of meat and poultry. Overall, the consumption of high-fat and highly sweetened foods should be limited since they provide nutritionally empty calories and leave less room in the daily energy quotient for nutrient-rich foods.

Mind/Body Considerations

Avoid soft drinks. When administered immediately following symptoms of a heart attack, aspirin has been shown to reduce mortality through its ability to reduce arterial blockage. Take alternate hot and cold showers frequently to increase circulation.

Additional Information

High level of hemocysteine are in blood are associated with cardiovascular problem and also not good for arteries.1 Homocysteine-X, Kyolic Homocysteine Formula 108 , Homocysteine Defense and Homocysteine PF are nutritional supplements. All of them contain Trimethylglycine, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin). Trimethylglycine shows its beneficial effects to maintain hemocysteine level. 2,3 Folic acid also Enhance to maintain normal range of hoocysteine. Similarly Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin) also work beneficially on homocysteine level.4
