Housemaid’s Knee Information You Need
| Basics |
|
Housemaid’s knee or Prepatellar Bursitis is another name for bursitis in front of the knee.
A bursa (bursae, plural for bursa) is a closed fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. When this bursa becomes inflamed, the condition is known as "bursitis."
At the tip of the knee, over the kneecap bone, is the prepatellar bursa. This bursa can become inflamed (prepatellar bursitis) from direct trauma to the front of the knee. It has been referred to as "housemaid’s knee," "roofer's knee," and "carpet layer's knee," based on the patient's associated occupational histories. Prepatellar Bursitis can lead to varying degrees of swelling, warmth, tenderness, and redness in the overlying area of the knee. However, as compared with knee joint soreness (arthritis), it is usually only mildly Discomfortful.

| Symptoms |
|

- Discomfort and swelling in the kneecap and just below.
- Difficulty in kneeling down and putting knee on the floor due to tenderness and swelling.
- Small, tender lumps underneath the skin over the patella. Sometimes the lumps give the feeling that something is floating around in front of the patella.
- Knee may be swollen, tender and warm to touch around the bursa.
- Chills and fever
- Abscess may form on the front of the knee and drain pus.
The last three symptoms are associated with prepatellar bursitis resulting from bacterial Problem created due to harmful organism.

The Beneficial Effectsion of housemaid’s knee should focus on the avoidance of kneeling that may lead to friction and mechanical trauma on the knees. If kneeling is required then kneepads and/ or sitting kneeling support should be used |

| Causes |
|
Several causes can be attributed to the occurrence of housemaid’s knee or prepatellar bursitis:
In some cases, a direct blow or a fall onto the knee can damage the bursa. This usually causes bleeding into the bursa sack, because the blood vessels in the tissue that makes up the bursa are damaged and torn. In the skin, this would simply form a bruise, but in a bursa the blood may fill the bursa sack. This causes the bursa to swell up (sort of like a rubber balloon filled with water). The blood in the bursa apparently causes an inflammatory reaction in the tissue that makes up the bursa. The walls may thicken and remain thickened and tender even after the body has absorbed the blood.
Repeated injuries to the bursa due to working down on the knees, such as a carpet layer or plumber needs to do, can lead to irritation and thickening of the bursa over time, thereby resulting in prepatellar bursitis.
The pre-patellar bursa can also become infected. This may occur without any warning, or may be caused by a small injury to the skin over the bursa, which spreads the Problem created due to harmful organism into the bursa. The bursa is filled with pus and the area around the bursa becomes hot, red and very tender.
