Information for Beta Carotene |
 |
Beta Carotene is a member of a group of naturally occurring chemicals known as carotenes or carotenoids.
It is found in plants and the yellow and orange color of fruits and vegetables is due to the presence of carotenes.
Beta Carotene is a well-known antioxidant, a substance which protects the body from harmful effects of ‘free radicals’ that are waste products created when the body converts food into energy.
These free radicals cause damage to cells and this in turn may lead to a variety of chronic ailments. Normally Beta Carotene is converted to Vitamin A (retinol) by the body. They body converts only as much Vitamin A as is required by it.
However, excessive amounts of Vitamin A intake as a supplement can be toxic.
