Suggested Use for Biotin

Biotin
Biotin is readily absorbed. As with most B vitamins, biotin is considered safe at supplemental doses. One person was once reported to become seriously ill with eosinophilic pleuropericarditis after taking 10 mg per day of biotin plus 300 mg of pantothenic acid per day for two months, though it’s unclear whether the problem was caused by the vitamins and, if so, which vitamin(s) might have been responsible. Some doctors suggest that people wishing to improve the health of their nails supplement with 2,500 mcg per day. For many people, however, a dietary intake of as little as 30 mcg is believed to be adequate. Probably this low level suffices because in healthy people, bacterial synthesis of biotin in the intestines pro-vides enough biotin for most of the body’s needs. Pregnancy, lactation, use of anti-seizure prescrip-tion medications, kidney dialysis, and supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid may all increase the body’s need for biotin above the 30 mcg level.

Additional Information for Biotin

Biotin
Like all B vitamins, biotin is water-soluble. Although deficiency is uncommon, a substance in uncooked egg whites called avidin can bind with biotin and pre-vent it from being absorbed. Avidin is destroyed when eggs are cooked. Biotin deficiency has been reported to cause dermatitis, Despair, loss of appetite, deafness and nausea. Infantile biotin deficiency can be caused by genetic prob-lems that lead to the inability to properly metabolize biotin. Such cases can be successfully treated with high-doses of biotin under the care of pediatricians who specialize in metabolic Malfunction of mind or bodys.
Biotin is often added to hair, skin and nail cosmetics, because of its reputa-tion for maintenance of the health of these tissues. Despite such applications, however, there is little evidence suggesting that topical use of this vitamin has any effect on hair, skin or nails. But when taken as a supplement, biotin has been reported to strengthen brittle nails. In one clinical trial using 2,500 mcg per day, biotin dramatically increased nail thickness for 91 percent of people suffering from this problem. In another six-month study of people taking 2,500 mcg per day, 63% responded with thicker, healthier nails.Similar findings have been confirmed independently in a controlled trial.Researchers have noted that blood levels of biotin are often deficient in people with diabetes.Preliminary reports have found that high doses of biotin
