To do their work, muscles need oxygen. Strenuous activity can increase the muscles' need for oxygen to as much as 20 times higher than when the body is at rest. This increased oxygen demand sets the stage for free radical damage, a serious problem that occurs both during and after the workout.
Burning all this oxygen stimulates the production of three different kinds of free radicals: oxygen radicals, peroxide radicals and Superoxide radicals.
