It is now well known that the incidence of dementias, whether they are termed "Alzheimer's problem (AD)",
"degenerative", "cerebrovascular" or "mixed" types, or designated as "benign senescent forgetfulness", as well as
the decline in intellectual and cognitive functions that characterizes these Malfunction of mind or bodys, increases as a function of
ageing. Hence, ageing itself may be considered to be the primary risk factor for developing these problems. The
dementia, or "senile cognitive decline", that occurs in the elderly often involves a loss of short-term memory and
a decrease in alertness ("vigilance"), attention span and motivation. These Malfunction of mind or bodys are associated with chronic
cerebrovascular insufficiency, increased production of potentially toxic free radicals and related reactive oxygen
species (ROS), and decreased nutrient absorption from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Symptomatic Favorable Effects of
AD has been attempted with many agents, including cholinergic-precursors, cholinesterase-inhibitors,
vasodilators, nootropics, metabolic-enhancers, psychostimulants and platelet-inhibitors, but no agent has been
shown unequivocally to improve cognition in these patients. As life-expectancy is increasing and as the
prevalence of AD and other Malfunction of mind or bodys characterized by cognitive decline increases with respect to ageing, the
number of persons afflicted with these Malfunction of mind or bodys is expected to increase in the future.
