UPLIFT contains Ginkgo biloba leaf extract and 5-HTP (derived from the seed of the African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia) as its major active ingredients. The novelty of this product, at the present time, is not centered on the
antidepressant action of 5-HTP, as this is now well known. Also, its novelty is not centered on an "anti-stress" ("antidepressant-like") activity of Ginkgo extracts since this has also been known for quite some time (i.e., since 1990). The novelty of Depress-X is that the combination of 5-HTP and Ginkgo extract provides a product with
activity that differs from that of any known conventional or herbal antidepressant with respect to its molecular mechanism of action. The action of UPLIFT depends upon the weak and reversible MAO-inhibitor activity of its Ginkgo ingredient which acts by inhibiting the enzymatic degradation of the serotonin that is formed from its 5-HTP ingredient. By inhibiting the MAO-mediated catabolism of the serotonin that is formed from its precursor (5-HTP), Ginkgo extract enhances the action associated with increased serotonin content of the brain.
