Additional Information for Valerian-Passion Flower
Valerian has been used as a sedative and relaxant at least since Roman times. It is used in Insomnia, Anxiety Tension/stress and Menstrual cramps
Dubbed the "Valium of the nineteenth century," valerian (chemically unrelated to Valium) is recognized worldwide for its relaxing effect on the body. In Europe it is often prescribed to treat anxiety. Unlike many of the prescription drugs valerian has few unpleasant side effects (other than the fact that it doesn't taste very good) and it is not addictive. Generally, valerian makes sleep more restful as well as making the transition to sleep easier, but does not tend to increase the total time slept, according to these studies. Valerian can relieve gas and intestinal cramps, and may be useful in treating low fevers and colds.
The historical use of passionflower is not dissimilar to its current use as a mild sedative. Passionflower was used to treat nervous restlessness and gastrointestinal spasms. In short, the effects of passionflower were believed to be primarily on the nervous system, particularly for anxiety due to mental worry and overwork.
Treatment For: Anxiety, Insomnia, Alcoholism, Eye inflammations, Headaches, Cardiovascular disease, Asthma Hormonal imbalances and Stress Passionflower's gentle sedative properties produce a relaxing effect, reducing nervous over-activity and panic, and making it a mild and non-addictive herbal tranquilizer, comparable in some ways to valerian. Occasionally, it is prescribed for convulsions.
