The plant is around 1m in height with knotty branches. The roots vary from0.6-1cm in diameter with solid, fibrous tissues. The flowers are yellow in color and the fruit is blue-black. The medicinal parts are the roots, which are bitter and acrid. The plant is found in Canada and eastern and northeastern U.S.
