Turmeric is an annual reaching a height of three feet, with a short stem, lance-shaped leaves and knobby rhizome. Turmeric is native to India southern Asia, and is cultivated throughout southern and eastern Asia. It is propagated by cuttings from the root, and needs well-drained soil and a humid climate. The rhizome is unearthed in winter.
