Arnica : For centuries arnica flowers have been used in herbal medicine to treat bruises, sprains and to relax stiff muscles. Arnica contains sesquiterpene lactones, substances known to reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Other active properties are thymol (an essential oil), flavonoids, inulin, carotenoids and tannins.
Arnica has also been shown to stimulate the activity of white blood cells that digest congested and coagulated blood. Arnica should not be applied to broken skin. Infrequently, arnica may cause an allergic reaction on the skin. Should this occur, the use of arnica should be discontinued.
