| Alternatively named as pepperidge bush and Berberis, a genus of about 450-500 species of evergreen plant. This plant is mostly found as resident of temperate and subtropical regions. 1 Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America are the countries where this plant grows. 1,2 It requires dry sandy soil with sunny location for its growth. 2 It is commonly used as an ornamental shrub in Europe. 2
Barberry attains height of about 8 ft (2.4 m), but can grow up to 10 ft (3 m) high. Plant contains yellow flowers and small rounded fleshy leaves with red or black berries. 2Its close relative, two other species of the plant, Nepalese and Indian barberry also show similar effects. 2
Traditionally, barberry was used to a large number of conditions, particularly problems created due to harmful organisms and digestive problems. 3 Barberry slows down growth of harmful organisms inside human cells and provides beneficial effects on body during harmful effects of germs. 4 Barberry also shows favorable effects in problems related to heart.
