This is an herbal tea that looks red and steeps red. Although some of the twigs have reddish look most of the trademark red color is created during oxidation. Oxidation (fermentation) is a natural process that is best seen in fruit. Bananas and apples turn dark when exposed to air. A natural enzyme found in most plants is responsible for oxidation of the leaves or fruit. Steam is used to stop this process when desired result is accomplished. Red Tea oxidation adds flavor and trademark color to the tea.
